The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf was founded on August 24, 1924. 

The 50th IOC Session, in Paris, France, on June 13, 1955, recognises İCSD as the single and independent international body regulating sports for the Deaf.

The first Deaflympics, known as the "International Silent Games", were held in Paris, France, in 1924. From 1924 to 2024, the ICSD has organized 24 Summer and 18 Winter Deaflympics.

The Deaflympics, held under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee, are the second oldest international multi-sport event in the world.

The Summer Deaflympics program includes the following sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee: athletics, shooting, badminton, basketball, bowling, judo, mountain biking, beach volleyball, football, futsal, handball, karate, golf, table tennis, orienteering, wrestling (both Greco-Roman and freestyle), taekwondo, tennis, swimming, cycling, volleyball. The Winter Deaflympics sports are ice hockey, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, snowboarding, and chess.
